Sarah Boone was an African American dressmaker who designed her title by inventing the modern-working day ironing board. In her patent application, she wrote that the purpose of her invention was "to create a cheap, basic, effortless and extremely helpful gadget, significantly adapted to be used in ironing the sleeves and bodies of ladies' clothes.
